The Local Show: August 23, 2012

This week on The Local Show: An update on the proposed UMKC Downtown Arts Campus, a look at how the WWI Museum pays tribute to veterans of all wars, a Paris of the Plains primer and a behind the scenes look at the dirty business of the port-o-potty.

This week on The Local Show, we examine the progress on the Big 5 initiative to move UMKC’s world class arts programs to a new downtown location and consider what that could mean for Kansas City’s downtown. While the National WWI Museum primarily pays tribute to veterans of the Great War, it also pays tributes to veterans of all conflicts. We take a look at how the museum embraces veterans from all conflicts and all branches of the military. During Prohibition, Kansas City was dubbed The Paris of the Plains. Now, local cocktail connoisseurs celebrate this history with a week’s worth of music, food and carefully crafted beverages in the Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival. We get a primer from American Restaurant’s General Manager Jamie Jamison and former Manifesto Bartender Brandon Cummins. Finally this week, we examine the business of providing people a place to do their business with a first hand look at Port-O-Potty practitioners.
