Local Kansas City high‐profile suicides motivated KCPT producer Sandy Woodson to investigate the issues surrounding depression and suicide.  The compelling result of her in‐depth study is “Mental Health Awareness,” a special edition of The Local Show airing on March 22 at 7:30pm.

The Local Show: March 28, 2012

This week, we go inside Thalia House, a Kansas City area group home that is helping local women cope with eating disorders, and we talk to area experts about the growing number of men and boys now asking for help.

This Thursday at 7 p.m., The Local Show presents a special episode on local trends and issues surrounding the important topic of eating disorders, which affects millions of Americans – women and men. We will also screen excerpts from two public television documentaries on the subject, which will be airing on KCPT immediately following The Local Show and RUCKUS, including Erasing ED(Eating Disorders) at 8:00 pm and Girl Model at 8:30 pm.

This week, we share some highlights from the debut of the Casavant organ at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts with a performance by James David Christie. Nick Haines sits down with Dianne Cleaver and Jim Heeter to discuss their plan of attack for the Troost corridor revitalization initiative which is one facet of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Big 5 Ideas. Randy Mason welcomes April Roy to The Local Show to discuss her role in deciding the winner of the prestigious Caldecott Medal which goes to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Finally, as part of our PerformArts series, we profile the Kansas City Chorale.

More Than Skin Deep is the informative, engaging and emotional story of skin cancer in America as told by patients, families, doctors, researchers, nurses, advocates and educators.

As part of our Difference Makers series, we profile Cristo Rey, a four-year Catholic college prep high school where students help pay for their education by working a job once a week. And we get a look at the new Black Archives of Mid-America which is set to reopen in the 18th & Vine Jazz District on June 16.
