The Trials of Robert J Oppenheimer: American Experience

J. Robert Oppenheimer's life and legacy and America's most famous top-secret initiative.
Watch Monday, May 23, 2011 at 9pm.

J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life and legacy are inextricably linked to America’s most famous top-secret initiative — the Manhattan Project. But after World War II, this brilliant and intense scientist, tasked with the development of the atomic bomb and widely considered one of the most important minds of the 20th century, fell from the innermost circles of American science. At the height of the Red Scare, the veil of suspicion fell over Oppenheimer. He was accused of having communist sympathies and was pressed to explain his relationships with known communists. This biography presents a complex and revealing portrait of one of America’s most influential scientists. Interweaving interviews with family members, scholars and colleagues with dramatic re-creations featuring Academy Award-nominated actor David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck and The Bourne Ultimatum ), this film follows Oppenheimer’s fascinating arc from the heady world of international physics to the top-secret Manhattan Project and finally to the dark days of the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Campbell Scott narrates.

Bowl by bowl, they built an empire that now spans the globe. This documentary, narrated by Kathy Bates, reveals the secret behind Tupperware’s success: the women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds who discovered they could move up in the world without leaving the house. Two Films by Tadashi Nakamura

Presented as part of Asian American Heritage Month.
Watch both films Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 10pm

With a hip music track and never-before-seen archival footage, PILGRIMAGE tells how an abandoned WWII concentration camp (Manzanar) for Japanese Americans was transformed into a symbol of retrospection and solidarity for people of all ages, races and nationalities in our post 9/11 world. During the 1970s when Asians in American were invisible to the country –and more importantly even to themselves – the late Chris Iijima’s music provided a voice and identity and entire generation had been in search of. Through animated photographs, intimate home movies, archival footage and Chris’ own songs, A SONG FOR OURSELVES shows how Chris’ music unleashed the contagious energy of the Asian American Movement with an unrelenting passion for social justice and a live well lived.
