Big 5: Moving UMKC’s World Class Arts Programs to a New Downtown Location

We get an update on the Chamber's Big 5 initiative to create a UMKC Arts Campus downtown. The Kansas City Public Library will be hosting a panel discussion about this project on September 5 at 6:30 pm.

They’ve narrowed it down to three. Three sites that is for UMKC to build a new downtown arts campus that would include room for its Conservatory of Music and Dance, but also space for its theater and other arts programs. This was one of the Big 5 Ideas advocated by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce last fall.

Even though the UMKC Conservatory has been a part of Kansas City’s cultural life for over one hundred years, many of us still know little about this hidden jewel, working hard to raise its profile both here and across the country. In fact, our story starts on a March night in New York City.

Finally this week we take a modern spin on a vintage art form. Head with us inside the craft-tastic world of Hammerpress, a letterpress, print and design studio in Kansas City’s crossroads neighborhood.

Producer Tony Ladesich captures artist Brady Vest’s handiwork as he brings us into the meticiculous and exacting world of typography.

You can see the work of Hammerpress for yourself this Friday night as part of the Crossroads First Fridays event. Hammerpress is located at 110 Southwest Boulevard in KCMO.

performARTS: Kansas City Actors Theatre

As part of our performARTS series in conjunction with KC Studio Magazine, Randy Mason provides viewers with a look at the Kansas City Actors Theatre, an artist-led, artist-driven ensemble of theatre professionals who produce classic and modern-classic plays in a true rotating repertory using only local Kansas City theatre artists.

This next story begins about ten years ago when the artistic director of a theater we won’t name decided not to cast local actors in major roles. Not surprisingly, that didn’t go over too well with some very talented people here in town. And it soon led to the birth of the Kansas City Actors Theatre.

Since then, that other organization has changed its policy, but the Actors Theatre goes on, gearing up this summer for its eighth season.

As part of our performARTS series in conjunction with KC Studio Magazine, we take you inside the Kansas City Actors Theatre.

The Kansas City Actors Theater kicks off its 8th season with Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, which will run August 8th through 26th at Union Station’s H&R Block City Stage.
