Coming up on the next episode of The Local Show: KCPT marks the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides with a landmark documentary that retells their story. Monday night, May 16 at 8 p.m. on KCPT, veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson presents the Freedom Riders, the first feature length film about this courageous band of citizens.

Recently, KCPT gathered almost two hundred people at Kansas City’s Plaza library for a citizen conversation to ask where they might take a freedom ride today?

The Local Show presents an extended excerpt of the documentary as well as highlights from the recent citizen conversation.

Samaritan’s Feet is on a quest to put shoes on the feet of 10,000 impoverished children in our own backyard. What compels hundreds of volunteers from churches in rural Missouri to join together to bring new sneakers to students at Martin Luther King Elementary School in the Kansas City, Missouri School District? While they live only about an hour apart, there is a world of difference. They discovered they all shared one unique experience and a gift that was much more than shoes.

In April, Roxy Paine’s “Ferment” was installed and dedicated and we were there. We’ll give you a much more detailed look at the amazing process on the Local Show in June, but for now here’s a “condensed” version of what went down with Kansas City’s brand new “dendroid.”

Freedom Riders: American Experience

Follow this courageous band of civil-rights activists traversing the segregated Deep South. Watch Monday, May 16, 2011 at 8pm

In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American society. Many states violently enforced the policy, while the federal government, under the Kennedy administration, remained indifferent, preoccupied with matters abroad. That is, until an integrated band of college students — many of whom were the first in their families to attend a university — decided, en masse, to risk everything and buy a ticket on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. They called themselves the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation.

Veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s inspirational documentary is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil-rights activists. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of youth and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds.

Prisoner of Her Past

This film illuminates a little-known illness: late-onset Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Airs Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 9pm

PRISONER OF HER PAST tells the story of a secret childhood trauma resurfacing, 60 years later, to unravel the life of Holocaust survivor Sonia Reich. The film follows her son, Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich, as he journeys across the United States and Eastern Europe to uncover why his mother believes the world is conspiring to kill her. Along the way, he finds a family he never knew he had. This film is the first to illuminate a little-known illness: late-onset Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The documentary examines the disorder’s devastating effect on families, but also shows programs that are aiding young trauma survivors of Hurricane Katrina, in New Orleans, and how such early interventions may have helped Howard’s mother.

Hour Three: "Arctic Wanderers" Watch Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 7pm

NATURE joins adventurer and bear biologist Chris Morgan on a year-long motorcycle odyssey deep into Alaska’s bear country to explore the amazing resiliency and adaptability of these majestic animals as they struggle to make a living in five dramatically diverse Alaskan ecosystems: coastal, urban, mountain, tundra and pack ice. Three-part miniseries.

In hour three (“Arctic Wanderers”): Chris Morgan travels to the far north of Alaska, the tiny North Slope town of Kaktovik. It’s early November and winter is coming on. But each year, the polar bears struggle for extended periods on dwindling fat reserves, waiting for the opportunity to hunt on sea ice that takes longer to freeze. In early spring, Morgan joins local hunters in Barrow, the northernmost city in Alaska, as they go out on their own hunts, facing some of the same challenges as the bears. In late spring, Morgan travels to the North Slope of the Brooks Range, where countless thousands of caribou cover the ground for miles. The grizzlies are waiting for them, as they have for thousands of years. Part three of three.
