Accompany host Yul Kwon as he journeys across the continent by air, road and rail, venturing behind the scenes with the workers who get us where we need to go. At the federal Aviation Administration command center, listen in on a call with NASA, the sercret service, the military and every major airline to learn how our national flight plan works today. Go along as he meets innovators creating ways to propel us farther and faster in years to come; in Las Vegas, he heads out into the wild night to see how transportation analysts are keeping traffic at bay by revolutionizing the use of one basic tool: the traffic light. Uncover the minor miracles and uphill battles involved in moving more than 300 million Americans every day on infrastructure built in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Lidia Celebrates America: Weddings

The second in a series of four PBS specials with celebrity chef and culinary author Lidia Bastianich continues the celebration of culture through food with a focus on the traditions surrounding weddings. The first story features an African-American wedding in New Orleans, complete with marching brass band and traditional regional cuisine that includes jambalaya, crawfish and pralines. An Indian-American wedding features actor Mario Cantone, well-known for his role as a wedding planner on TV’s “Sex and the City,” and Indian actress and food writer Madhur Jaffrey, who will teach Lidia and the audience about classic Indian wedding dishes, including tandoori specials, seafood kebabs and a variety of Indian breads. The third wedding features a Korean-American wedding with celebrity fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, who creates a special outfit for Lidia to wear to the wedding. “Survivor” winner and host of AMERICA REVEALED, Yul Kwon, adds commentary and perspective on Korean culture. The final wedding in the program examines the marriage of two cultures — Irish-American and Italian-American, with music and food from each represented.

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF ASA CARTER explores the life and legacy of the best-selling novelist of The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (republished in 1975 as Gone to Texas) and The Education of Little Tree (1976). Billed as an autobiographical story about an orphaned Native American boy, The Education of Little Tree was later revealed as a complete fabrication. The author: notorious white supremacist and Ku Klux Klan leader Asa Earl Carter (under the name Forrest Carter), the writer responsible for George Wallace’s infamous 1963 “Segregation now! Segregation forever!” speech. Friends, colleagues and members of George Wallace’s inner circle provide unprecedented access into the life of this enigmatic man, while scholars and historians reflect on the nature of Carter’s identity shift, his place in the history of the civil-rights movement and his legacy.
