KCPT Fall Night on the Town – Independence, MO

KCPT Night on the Town - Independence Square.

It was a lovely evening to stroll around the Independence Square at KCPT’s 3rd Night on the Town event, hosted by Cindy McClain and Check Please! Kansas City host Doug Frost.

We started at Diamond Bowl and sampled Lamb sliders and Crab Cake Balls. The signature cocktail was a White Russian.

Next stop was at Cafe Verona, where we were served Panzanella Salad and Tomato Bread Soup. Wine pairing was Alois Lageder Pinot Bianco 2009.

Main Course was at Ophelia’s. First we were served Salmon Wrapped Dayboat Scallops stuffed wtih spinach, roasted red pepper and stone ground mustard over a vegetable risotto and topped with a limonata sauce. Wine pairing was Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay. Next we were served Espresso Encrusted Pork Tenderloin, with a sweet potato gratin and chipotle demi-glace. Wine pairing was Ruta 22 Malbec.

Dessert at The Rheinland featured Apple Strudel, Linzer cookies and Black Forrest Torte. Three varieties of Roasterie Coffee were offered.

To him, the craft of bartending is more than just making a drink. Rather, he believes bartending is a true skill akin to the professionalism of chefs and their culinary educations. This belief in bartending as an art form has been the basis for his career and educational pursuits in the beverage industry.

In 2007, Maybee turned his vast knowledge and experience into a comprehensive consulting business. He launched RoundTable Marketing and Consulting, which specializes in wine list and cocktail menu development, staff training, and restaurant and bar consultation. Later that year, RoundTable partnered with beverage industry expert, Doug Frost, to create the Greater Kansas City Bartending Competition. The annual competition showcases some of the most talented bartenders in Kansas City and serves as a benefit for a local charity, the HALO Foundation.

In 2009, he opened Manifesto, a small, speakeasy like bar focusing on classically inspired cocktails using all fresh and homemade ingredients. In a short time, the bar has already received overwhelming local and national attention by being noticed in The New York Times, Esquire, and winning Small Wonder Bar of the Year 2010 by Nightclub & Bar Magazine.

Black and white image of Rieger HotelThe Rieger Hotel opened in 1915 and was home to many travelling salesmen, railroad workers, and passersby during Kansas City’s formative years. The three-story brick building has a long, rich history and much of the décor, including the tile floor and the bathroom fixtures remain original. It was originally owned by Alexander Rieger, the son of Jacob Rieger, who was the founder of J. Rieger & Co. Whiskey. J. Rieger & Co. operated out of Kansas City’s West Bottoms neighborhood, also known as “The Wettest Block in the World”, from 1877 to 1919. The whiskey distribution company became one of the largest in the country before Prohibition and the Volstead Act put an end to their success. But the Rieger name lived on here at the hotel, and in 2010 The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange brought back that classic name and identity. It’s our goal to honor the history of the Rieger name while adding a new and lasting landmark restaurant to Kansas City’s culinary landscape.

Recipe for The Pendergast:

1/2 ounce Bénédictine
3/4 ounce Sweet Vermouth
1 1/2 ounces Bourbon
Couple dashes of Angostura Bitters

Pour over ice. Stir to chill. Pour into glass. Zest with a lemon. Enjoy.

See a sneak preview of Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s latest documentary film series Prohibition, which debuts on KCPT in October. Then explore how the Great War impacted the Eighteenth Amendment and what Kansas City was like during Prohibition. You may also toast the juice joints of yore with a special cocktail before the screening by the mixologists of the Rieger Hotel and learn how to make a “Pendergast” – a drink as powerful as the political boss it is named after.

This free event will be held at the WWI Museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium.

Check, Please! Kansas City is KCPT’s restaurant review show where host Doug Fost sits down with regular viewers like you dine and dish on their favorite local eateries.

Each episode features three guests; each recommends his or her favorite restaurant. The other two guests then go and experience it for themselves. After the guests have experienced each other’s recommendations they meet at KCPT’s studio to discuss their experiences. The reviewers are not affiliated with any restaurant, nor are they food experts. They come from all walks of life—attorneys, scrub techs, self-proclaimed media darlings—and the list goes on. They live all over the metropolitan area, including one intrepid soul who trucks in to work every day from Baldwin City, Kansas.
