On April 19 the school districts of Spring Hill, Park Hill, Hickman Mills and North Kansas City came together for a “Lunch & Learn” held at KCPT. Lunch was furnished as the school district representatives learned about the many educational services that are provided to teachers across the area.
Stop by the Prairie Oak Nature Center in Ironwood Park to pick-up a map and instructions for a special wildlife scavenger hunt. In addition to the Nature Center, a children’s playground and trails, the park includes the Historic Oxford School House, which will be open from 11am – 2pm.

The topic of bullying is prevalent in the news these days. It’s even the subject of a major new movie now playing in area theaters. It’s called, simply Bully.
This year, over five million kids will be bullied at school, online, on the bus, at home, through their cell phones and on the streets of their towns, making it the most common form of violence young people in this country experience.
We begin this week’s Local Show by introducing you to an unexpected bullying prevention resource in our metro…Wayside Waifs. What, you might ask, does an animal shelter know about bullying? Well, as you’re about to see, it seems quite a lot.
As statistics show, many bullies begin their harassment hurting animals. Wayside Waifs provides a unique violence prevention curriculum for grade school kids that involves bringing dogs into the classroom to teach some important lessons. The program is called No More Bullies.
KCPT’s 2012 PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest encourages kids to GO! Write! KCPT is once again encouraging elementary school students to stretch their creative wings by hosting the contest in the Kansas City region. For more than 15 years thousands of kids in grades K-3 have participated in this annual local and national contest. Stories can be mailed to the station or submitted online. Contest deadline is April 10, 2012. Local winners will be announced in late April and national winners will be announced in July. Learn more about the contest guidelines and how to submit your story.
