Latest from the Supremes, Kansas Board of Regents increasing tuition, All-Star cleanup, and what makes Kevin run!

TOPIC 1: LATEST FROM THE SUPREMES
Assuming that the U.S. Supreme Court renders its verdict in the “Affordable Care Act” case by taping time, we’ll discuss that first. Then, we’ll discuss the ruling in the Arizona Immigration case.

TOPIC 2: “K” STANDS FOR “KOSTLY.”
The Kansas Board of Regents is increasing tuition at all state four-year institutions of higher education. Also, the Regents will impose higher academic standards at Kansas University commencing in 2016. One member of the board said the enhanced academic requirements were not designed to keep students out, but to keep them in.

TOPIC 3: ALL-STAR CLEANUP
Kansas City is undertaking a “pothole blitz” as part of the clean-up, fix-up effort to impress visitors and the media during All-Star Game festivities. Estimated cost about 900-thousand dollars. It’s certainly understandable that the city would want Kansas City to make a good impression during this important event.

TOPIC 4: WHAT MAKES KEVIN RUN!
Although he faces no opposition either from within his own party in the August primary or from Democrats in November, 3rd District Kansas U.S. Representative Kevin Yoder is running harder than ever. That the observation from Steve Rose in one of his recent columns.

Ruckus: June 21, 2012

The Ruckettes discuss KCI proposed terminal changes, the Mission Mall plan update and other stories this week.

TOPIC 1: IF IT AIN’T BROKE…BREAK IT!
There’s another plan now being discussed to reconfigure KCI. This one would put all facilities in what is now Terminal A. Anecdotal evidence suggests area residents like KCI and are happy with the three terminal approach now in use.

TOPIC 2: TAXICOLOGY!
Yael writes in a recent column about the value of sun-setting (putting a time limit on) taxes. He also notes that there is no sunset provision for the sales tax on the August 7th ballot in Kansas City.

TOPIC 3: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?
It’s been seven years since a developer bought the Mission Mall area at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Roe. The plan was to build a mixed-use project featuring a major aquarium and a 150-room hotel. Now, plans for the aquarium and the hotel have been scrapped. The apparent centerpiece of the new project will be a Walmart which will move a few blocks from nearby Roeland Park. When the project was originally announced, it was seen as a major economic development victory for Mission.

TOPIC 4: GIVE ME YOUR YOUNG, YOUR HISPANIC, YOUR FUTURE DEMOCRAT
Through an Executive Order, President Obama is enabling a certain group of illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation. The group involves younger immigrants who were brought to the U.S. by their parents and played no role themselves in committing an illegal act. Some analysts say Obama is playing politics in an effort to solidify and expand his already strong Latino support for the fall election.

Pulling the plug on a destination aquarium in Mission. Crown Center shuts down a summer tradition. Missouri's U-S Senate race heats up. Shuffling the political decks in Kansas. Plus, refusing to give up...why a grand jury might decide a controversial statue's fate in Overland Park.

THIS WEEK: Friday, June 15, 2012 @ 7:30 pm
(Rebroadcast Sunday @ 11 am )

MISSION PULLS PLUG ON AQUARIUM: Longtime plans to build a destination aquarium in Johnson County, much bigger in fact than the one recently opened at Crown Center, come to an abrupt halt this week.

U-S SENATE RACE HEATS UP: Is President Obama giving up on Missouri? And if so, does that only hurt Claire McCaskill in her bid to win re-election to the U-S Senate?

SHUFFLING THE POLITICAL DECKS IN KANSAS: The political news in Kansas centers on the chaos over redistricting as hundreds of candidates file for office in brand new political districts while some longtime incumbents see their seats totally vanish.

CROWN CENTER SHUTS DOWN A SUMMER TRADITION: It’s not summer in Kansas City for many families with small children, without a cool down at the Crown Center fountains. But that decades long tradition is now over. Crown Center is adopting a zero tolerance policy. No more splashing and cavorting in its water. Some surprised parents are now threatening a boycott of the shopping area.

OP ARBORETUM ART CONTROVERSY: It’s a story that is not going away. Now citizens are hoping to convene a grand jury to take up the issue of a headless bare breasted statue on the grounds of the south Overland Park attraction.

SLY JAMES WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE: Kansas City Mayor Sly James is trying to lose weight. He launched a weight loss challenge this week with Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce President Jim Heeter. Other plus-sized mayors and governors, for that matter, have used their girth to push for massive citywide campaigns that have transformed eating habits and have helped get their communities moving and in shape. But is there any sense this is more than just a cute photo-op?
