Zip, Zip and Away: UMKC’s Zipcar Program

Nick Haines talks to Bob Simmons, UMKC's Associate Vice Chancellor of Administration, who is heading up the Zipcar program on the UMKC campus.

Forget the bus or hailing the cab. There’s a new way to zip around
town. UMKC and Rockhurst University are taking part in a new car sharing program known as Zipcars. Designed for students, but available for anyone in the community, Zipcars let you rent a car for just seven bucks an hour, gas and insurance included.

The company, which started in 2000 at Harvard and MIT, has grown to
include 250 colleges and universities in 16 big cities. Until now,
the closest it came to KC was Chicago. Nick Haines talks to Bob
Simmons who is heading up the Zipcar program on the UMKC campus.

Building Futures: Mid-America Head Start

Barbra Porter sits down with the directors of the Mid-America Head Start program to discuss the various resources available to help low-income families.

Many of us have heard of Head Start, but we don’t always have a full understanding of what they do. Guest host Barbra Porter sits down with the directors of the Mid-America Head Start program to discuss their focus on not only ensuring children are ready to learn when they enter school but also on its services for nutrition, health and family support.

Mid-America Head Start and Early Head Start serve more than 3,000 infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers in Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri. We are dedicated to improving the well-being of low-income families by working with each family to identify their specific needs.

Fifty Years of KCPT: What Does KCPT Mean to You? Part Three

To mark KCPT's 50th birthday, we’ve asked 50 viewers to tell us what KCPT
means to them. We leave you this week with more of YOUR creative messages.

Throughout Janaury we’ve been celebrating KCPT’s 50th birthday on The Local Show. Did you know, by the way, our station’s original licensee was the Kansas City Missouri School District and the Kansas City, Missouri School Board?

KCPT Public Television is 50 years old. As we mentioned last week, in the spirit of turning 50, we recently invited 50 of our viewers to tell us what KCPT means to them. Our only request was to write it on a sign with a marker in 5 words or less. The only exception to the rule: Figure out a way to show your five words more creatively. Here are some of the responses from your friends and neighbors as we recorded them around the metro.

What does KCPT mean to you? Can you tell us in five words or less on a sign or in some other creative way? Send a link to your video or email a photo to The Local Show. We’ll show you more of these on next week’s program.

Here is a look back to 1983…

You can email images and video clips to thelocalshow@kcpt.org or share them with us on Facebook or Twitter.
