Box Office Home Run: The KC Premiere of ’42′

Hollywood megastars and baseball superstars walked the red carpet in Kansas City for the premiere of "42," the new Jackie Robinson movie. Randy Mason was on deck to catch the action.

Last Friday, the new movie 42, about Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier, opened in theatres nationwide. But the night before, Kansas City got a special preview at the Barrywoods AMC Theatre to raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. They rolled out the red carpet, and Randy Mason was on hand to see who came down it and why.

By the way, the 42 premiere raised some $200,000 for the museum, which also has another interesting project going right now. They have teamed with the UMKC Theatre Department to produce a new play about Satchel Paige and other Negro Leagues players.

It has some jazz in it too. The play is called Kansas City Swing and it will run at the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center on the UMKC campus from April 19-28, with a special reception in the lobby before the show on April 25.

Hospital Hullabaloo: The Battle Over North Kansas City Hospital

Sam Zeff reports on the contentious battle over the future of North Kansas City Hospital.

It is not very often that a Mayor’s race hinges on what’s going to happen to the local hospital.

That is exactly what happened last week in North Kansas City. For over a year, the city has been in a legal, legislative and public relations battle with North Kansas City Hospital over the hospital’s future.

This fight between the city and the hospital has been expensive. So far, both sides say they have spent almost a million and a half dollars on lawyers. And while the new Mayor, Don Stielow, ran on a platform of saving the hospital, we don’t know what the rest of the council will do.

Also, the city recently added eight members to the hospital’s board of trustees and we don’t know what they’re going to do either. It’s a good bet this is going to be bogged down in the courts for some time.

Who really owns it? Why are residents so upset? And more importantly, will it be sold to a for-profit hospital chain? KCPT special correspondent Sam Zeff has been digging into those thorny questions.

Laptop Classrooms: Technology As A Teaching Tool

Reporter Danny Wood examines whether providing laptops to high school students in the KCK school district is producing any improvement in performance.

Pencils, paper and laptops?

More than 5 years ago, the Kansas City, Kansas School District began giving free laptop computers to all of its high school students.

Three years ago, North Kansas City joined the gadget giveaway by providing free net-books to its high schoolers. And starting this school year, students receive 11-inch MacBook Air laptops.

Everybody loves technology, but what have these school districts got to show for their massive investment? Are test scores up?

We sent reporter Danny Wood on assignment to find out if the district’s investment is paying dividends.
