Women’s Equality: The Low Wage Trap

We examine The Low Wage Trap issue through the experiences of three women who depend on child care subsidies which they risk losing if they make even one cent per hour more than they currently do.

How many of us would turn down a pay raise? I am sure most of us would say: Are you crazy?
Believe it or not, for thousands of low income parents in our bi-state area getting even 25 cents more an hour is a terrifying proposition because it means they will lose thousands of dollars a month in day care subsidies for their children. Producer Rich Miller headed over to our areas largest low income day care center, Operation Breakthrough, to talk with three mothers about this extraordinary issue of The Low Wage Trap where to better yourself would actually make you worse off.

In this past session of the Missouri legislature, Republican Senator Rob Schaaf introduced a bill called, “The Low Wage Trap Elimination Act” which would have prevented low income Missourians from losing their child care subsidies overnight should they begin making a little more money. It passed the legislature, but the funding required to implement the program has been withheld by the governor.

Randy Mason sits down with Steve Paul to discuss the book Kansas City Noir, a collection of stories from some of the region's most talented writers.

Picture steam rising from a sewer grate on a rain-slicked street. The sound of footsteps come closer and closer behind you as you walk down a dark, downtown Kansas City alley. If this scenario entices you, then you just might enjoy Kansas City Noir, a new anthology of short stories that takes readers on a journey through Kansas City’s seedy underbelly. The book’s editor is Steve Paul from the Kansas City Star who writes in the introduction that this is a city that’s home to its share of serial killers and moral turpitude. He sat down with Randy Mason to share that gritty side of our town.
