I have been dining at El Sombrero in Claycomo, Missouri since day one. Even though I moved to Excelsior Springs, I will not eat Mexican food unless it is from El Sombrero. The family are the nicest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. I always tell our customers at the Chinese Restaurant I work at to go to El Sombrero for the best Mexican food around. El Sombrero rocks!!!!

Although the food at El Sombrero is ok – the odor within the buidling is unbearable. The smell in that building permeated my clothing and hair. I will not visit there again. It’s probably due to the smoking, but I have been to other establishments that allow smoking that do not have this horrible odor.

Where do I even begin…..I live extremely close to this
joint and have been going for years….REGULARLY! A few weeks back went and
received the worst customer service that I have EVER received. The owner
was completely rude to me. Let me back up, When my family
and I sat down everything was great. We got our drinks, chips, and salsa
quickly. I asked for an additional side of hot salsa. When they brought
it out, it tasted like hot ketchup. It was absolutely disgusting. This
is not how it normally tastes so I asked for them to take it back. They
did….but they still billed me for the additional sauce, REALLY? I
thought that was in very poor taste. Oh and I have not even touched on
the food order yet…..they forgot my son’s order and by the time it got
there we were practically done eating. My daughters food was GROSS. She
ordered a new item this time. She ordered a flauta. It came out 2
flautas w/ cheese, sour cream, pico, beans, and rice. I thought “What a
great deal for $4.” Since she is a kid she only ate 1 flauta. Didn’t
touch the rest. When I got the bill they charged me double that amount
for the platter. This is when I talked to the owner. I walked up to the
register calm and cool because I thought that she would be understanding
and clear up the problem. She was the EXACT opposite. Very cold, rude,
and could have cared less whether or I was happy. What is sad is that
they lost a longtime loyal customer. Not only that but I will utilize my
resources and let my situation be known. The Northland is a small
place to live and world travels fast!!! I just could not believe that
she treated a customer that way. What was I to do? She was the owner.
It’s not like I could have climbed the ladder in hopes to be heard out.
What happened to good customer service. Customer is never right in this
joint. Good lord!!

I went to El Sombrero the other night, hoping for some of their
wonderful tacos & to see my favorite waitress, Wanda. Wanda wasn’t working,
but the tacos were still very good. I was in the last table in the back all by
myself. I looked over at the long tables & black metal chairs by the
bathroom and wonderful memories flooded through my mind of all the happy times
of my family & I going there almost every week. Mom, Dad, my sister,
brother-in-law, my nephews & myself. The bill for a party of 8 was always a
lot, but worth every penny because we all liked the food and truly enjoyed
Wanda. Most of the time we didn’t even have to order because Wanda knew what we
all wanted. I choked back tears seeing where each member of my family would
always sit, remembering what they had on and were eating, watching my nephews
enjoy deserts and visiting with Jeannie.
HOWEVER, with that said… I will NEVER eat at El Sombrero in Claycomo again. Don’t make the
mistake of voicing your opinion if you don’t like something. They’ll attack you
with some of the most nasty hateful comments you’ll ever see.
I hate the new white queso they have and should have asked for my money
back. It was tasteless and reminded me of paste. 4 tacos, the tasteless paste,
a Pepsi, tax & tip was $19.00 for one person. I thought it was a lot. The
last time I was there, 4 tacos were only $4.75 and the queso was $3.00. I’m not
saying the pricing isn’t comparable to other places; but I left feeling ripped
off… no Wanda… no Cheez Wiz Queso… stuck in the corner… no Pepsi
refill… no Big Tony… smelling like a stink’n ashtray… and shattered memories
of good times. I posted a comment on El Sombrero’s FB wall that the tacos were
still very good, but I didn’t like the queso and thought the prices were high.
I was immediately attacked by a Regina Rivera and the grand daughter of the
original owners who went by name of “Whats HerFace” on FB. I will say
that after enduring their smart mouths, name calling and personal attacks; I
will NEVER go to El Sombrero or say anything nice about the place ever again.
It’s just a shame you can’t even voice an opinion without being attacked.
I used to post the most wonderful things about El Sombrero on
Topix. Never again! A friend posted that she has heard 3 negative
comments about El Sombrero in one week. The reviews on Urban
Spoon aren’t good, either. There are other similar experiences and loss of long
time customers like myself. I finally
deleted my post on FB after repeated verbal attacks by the two; which is
probably what they were going for. I complimented them on the tacos. They were
just fine. I just thought that a $19.00 check for 4 tacos, a Pepsi with no
refill and some nasty queso was excessive. According to their comments, 1) I’m
a waste of their time; 2) I’m not a food critic; 3) My opinion is idiotic; 4)
My comment about the queso is antagonistic, inflammatory & myoptic. We’re talking about tacos, Pepsi & queso.
No need for personal attacks. I’m glad to hear it’s not just me.
I went from it being one of my favorite spots to I’ll never go there
again. My business goes to Rancho Grande
in Liberty.

Clearly we are in the same boat. I experienced this EXACT same situation! They lost me for good and everyone I know. Word travels fast!
