And The Winning Writers Are…

The tallies are in for the 2012 KCPT PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest! This year there were a total of 45 stories entered.
The contest, presented locally by KCPT with national funding support from Studentpublishing.com, encourages children in grades K-3 in the Kansas City region and in communities across the country to celebrate the power of language and creativity by creating and submitting original stories and illustrations. KCPT was one of sixty-three public television stations across the country that participated in this year’s contest.
All first place winners from KCPT’s contest will be entered into the national PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, where they will compete against area winners from across the county.

The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is produced annually by PBS KIDS and managed and created by WNED-TV Buffalo/Toronto, and is a part of PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a national initiative that uses the power of public media to build the reading skills of children ages two to eight. Teachers, Your Friends at the Zoo Salute You!

Saturday, May 5, KCPT partcipated in Teacher Appreciation Day at the Kansas City Zoo. The Zoo, in partnership with the Kansas City Environmental Educators Network (KCEEN), hosted this special day to honor teachers. Teachers were treated to a complimentary day at the zoo with unlimited train, tram and carousel rides. Booths were set up around the zoo providing information and giveaways. KCPT enjoyed visiting with all the teachers that stopped by.

“Lunch & Learn” at KCPT

On April 19 the school districts of Spring Hill, Park Hill, Hickman Mills and North Kansas City came together for a “Lunch & Learn” held at KCPT. Lunch was furnished as the school district representatives learned about the many educational services that are provided to teachers across the area.
Last Chance to Enter the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. Deadline is Tomorrow!

KCPT’s 2012 PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest encourages kids to GO! Write! KCPT is once again encouraging elementary school students to stretch their creative wings by hosting the contest in the Kansas City region. For more than 15 years thousands of kids in grades K-3 have participated in this annual local and national contest. Stories can be mailed to the station or submitted online. Contest deadline is April 10, 2012. Local winners will be announced in late April and national winners will be announced in July.

Gordon Parks Celebrates

On Friday, March 30, KCPT helped kindergarten and 4th grade students celebrate the successful completion of the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies Program by treating to pizza and ice cream. The 10-week literacy program paired Big Buddies with Little Buddies to help encourage the Little Buddies to read and learn new words each week. Gordon Parks was the first school in the Kansas City area to go through the 10-week program. Many more Martha Speaks Reading Buddies programs are anticipated in the Kansas City area.
SEA LIFE and KCPT Announce Winners!

The Park Hill South High School’s broadcasting class, The South Side Scoop, was the winning team of the SEA LIFE Aquarium – KCPT’s High School Broadcast Journalism Contest. The winning spot will air on KCPT Channel 19 during The Local Show April 5 at 7:30 PM. Tune in to watch how students were able to capture the arrival of the fish to their new homes at the SEA LIFE Aquarium in Kansas City.

KCPT & SEA LIFE Journalism Contest kickoff!

KCPT and SEA LIFE Aquarium Kansas City hosted a high school journalism contest March 15. Nine area high schools were given the opportunity to be on site as the first fish arrived at their new home. Over 30 students worked all day capturing footage to create a winning 2 minute spot that will air on KCPT’s The Local Show hosted by Nick Haines. Schools present: Bonner Springs, Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit North, North Kansas City, Oak Park, Park Hill and Park Hill South, Raytown and Kansas City Kansas School Districts.
