SESSION ONE

Achieve3000 – Room 101 (Capacity 25)

This session will address on-line nonfiction differentiated instruction designed to better prepare students for college and career and help teachers spend more time on task.  Participants will get an opportunity to explore mini lessons and units that support core content and allow every student to read complex text, build reading strategies, increase vocabulary and write effective arguments with supporting evidence.  Each participant will also receive a copy of our new white paper, “10 Steps for Migrating Your Curriculum to the Common Core”.

Becoming a Connected Educator – Personal Learning Networks That Work for You! – Room 114 (Capacity 30)

Professional learning networks help us to connect, collect, curate, and create resources for teaching, leading, and our students’ learning.  Understand basic foundations of how social media technologies such as Twitter, Google Reader, and Google+ can be leveraged for quality professional learning.  Learn best practices for collecting and curating resources and ideas via social media.  Participants need to bring a tablet computer or laptop.

Learning with iPad – Apps and Content Creation for K-12 – Room 251

In this session we’ll look at what makes a great app, and how you can find the best education apps. We’ll also explore content creation on the iPad.

45 in 60 – Great Websites and Apps for Teachers – Room 109 (Capacity 25)  SESSION FULL

Buckle up and get ready for a fast paced presentation of apps and websites that will help you be more productive and engage your students.  Eric will quickly cover a wide variety of sites, almost all of which are free, to make your life easier and more efficient.  Don’t worry about scrambling to write down all of the resources, he will share an online site that contains a copy of the presentation and all the links so you can go back and explore later.

Super Power Source: Room 108 (Capacity 30)

In this workshop teachers with learn how to help children embark on a quest for alternative energy sources. They harness the sun’s heat with a parabolic mirror and choose volunteers to ramp up a power generation station. They act as power hunters to pinpoint renewable and nonrenewable resources. Tight teamwork turns on solar devices and a united breath of air runs a fan-powered light bulb. A small-scale demonstration reveals the enormous potential for fuel cells.

Fun in the Great Outdoors – Geocaching!  – Room 111 (Capacity 45)

Geocaching gives teachers and students a unique way to combine education, exploration and recreation while learning valuable lessons in technology, teamwork and creativity. Geocaching is a globally popular, high-tech treasure hunt where participants of all ages explore the outdoors, using GPS devices to hide and find containers of various shapes and sizes that are filled with trinkets and logbooks. In 2010, Garmin announced the creation of OpenCaching.com, a completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches – easy to use and perfect for the classroom environment. In this session, Jake Jacobson from Garmin shares ideas on how geocaching can get our tech-savvy generation of kids outside for some interactive fun, exercise and learning!

K-6 Primary Sources – Exposed! – Room 100 (Capacity 25)

Wondering where to find primary sources to include in the new Common Core standards for K-6? Join us and discover a wealth of online resources. We will share databases, websites and provide you with the opportunity to have a hands-on practice with time for questions and sharing.

SESSION TWO

Learn360 Updates – Room 101 (Capacity 25)

Learn360 is expanding more than ever and adding thousands of new resources to the site for you to use in your classroom! Learn360 provides resources for teachers of every grade and subject matter. In this session, we will explore the over 80,000 digital resources on Learn360 consisting of full-length videos, short video clips, audio files, images, and teaching resources.  This session will focus on ensuring that your classroom is meeting and exceeding 21st century classroom expectations. An online community of online learning tools will also be explored and you will leave the session with your questions about integrating digital media in your classroom answered.

Rethinking Evidence, Reimagining College Prep at the Core – Room 100 (Capacity 25)

Raymond Chandler once wrote: “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. ” The Common Core Standards require learners to demonstrate the ability to supply and integrate relevant evidence from diverse media and evaluate it for its accuracy, credibility, strengths and limitations.  In this workshop, participants will look at how college preparation skills like research and evaluation can easily be connected with exciting lessons that motivate learners.  Participants will look at ways to incorporate online resources and a modern twist on old-fashioned detective work into the common core classroom.

Learning with iPad – iBooks and iTunes U for 9-12 – Room 251

In this session we’ll explore the interactive, multi-touch world of iBooks and iBooks Author. We’ll also see how any secondary teacher can publish digital courses to iTunes U.

You Can Do That with Google?  Yes! – Room 109 (Capacity 25)  SESSION FULL

Google is much more than just a search engine.  Eric, a Google Certified Teacher, will share a wide variety of tools available from Google help increase your productivity, reduce the amount of paper you use, engage your students and help you collaborate with other teachers.  Learn some tips and tricks to make your life easier.  A copy of the handout and online links to resources will be available for this session.

Surprises @ Your Public Library – Room 106 (Capacity 30)

Discover resources you never knew existed at your public library.  Johnson County Library and Kansas City Public Library continue the traditional in-branch services, but you and your students now have access to amazing online resources – free e-books, music, articles, and more!

Common Core and Screen Kids:  Infusing 21st Century Teaching and Learning – Room 114 (Capacity 25)

This session focuses on how 21st century skills are the pathway to reaching screen kids while implementing common core standards into instruction.

Radical Robots: Want to get children excited about robots, but don’t know where to start? – Room 108 (Capacity 30)

This workshop introduces elementary teachers to what a robot really and isn’t, simple programming, and critical thinking skills. Teachers will become children again as they become wrapped up in the world of robotics! Volunteers act out a robot, remote control device, and an automaton. A reading and writing robot draw shapes, detects objects, and tracks lines. Participants circulate through learning centers to control an automaton through sound, move a robot through a maze, and make a soccer robot score a goal!

The Interactive Classroom:  From Theory to Reality (Recommended for Administrators, Technology Directors, Curriculum Directors and Decision Makers– Room 111 (Capacity 45)

This session will focus on practical tools and strategies for creating an interactive, collaborative learning environment.  The session will discuss and utilize such interactive and collaborative tools as interactive response devices, document cameras, and interactive whiteboards.  The session will also address integrating iPads and other tablet devices into the classroom-learning environment.

Lunch:  Technology and the Future of Education

During lunch, Shane Guiter, Vice President of Digital Media, Kansas City Public Television, will lead a panel of experts and moderate an open forum as they discuss the impact of technology and how teachers teach and students learn.

Research in the 21st Century – Room 106 (Capacity 25)  

SESSION FULL

Most students choose the Internet to find the information they need when assigned a research project. But the Internet can overwhelm students with information they may not have the skills to evaluate. Based on the new Common Core Standards which stress inquiry based learning and research skills, this session will give participants suggestions for:
- Evaluating web resources
- Alternative search engines for different age levels
- Digital note taking
- Web search strategies
- Alternative digital research projects and templates.

Learning with iPad – Apps and Content Creation for K-12 – Room 251

In this session we’ll look at what makes a great app, and how you can find the best education apps. We’ll also explore content creation on the iPad.

Lights, Color, Action: What do fireworks and astronomy have in common? Light! – Room 108 (Capacity 30)

Explore the color spectrum with prisms and diffraction glasses, blend colors to produce white light and split white light into colors.  See how pigments blend differently from light, and how they are combined to produce colors. See how scientists use light to study space, and figure out why the sunset is so pretty some days.

In just 10 years of existence, Wikipedia has become a standard source used by over 400 million people each month—the 5th most popular site on the web.  Since your students are likely among those who find it useful, we want to explore how to use it effectively in a school setting.  While Wikipedia’s “collaborative community” model comes with issues, there is also a growing respect for its usefulness as a starting point for research—it relies on authoritative sources that it cites (about half of them books) and has a transparent process.  In this class we will walk through how articles are created and what the safeguards are to ensure that Wikipedia is a credible and neutral resource.

In this workshop participants will learn way to bring hands on fun into activities dealing with structure, forces and motion. We will answer the question ”Can we build it?”  Using triangles, cylinders and arches we can! Explore how combinations of these shapes stand up against the forces of compression and tension!

ZooED & Distance Learning – Room 106 (Capacity 30)

Do you love the zoo….just can’t get enough of it?  Then come and learn what the zoo has to offer you.  Our new ZooED program is designed to promote common core standards by using hands-on, interactive learning to enhance Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies standards while exploring the world of animals and conservation through DVD’s of animal keepers, live animal feeds via webcams and on-site activities.  The ZooED program is currently open to Clay & Jackson County Missouri 2nd grade classrooms…soon to be followed by 4th and 8th grades.  BUT there’s more….for those of you not in Missouri, check out our Distant Learning Programs.  Enjoy the zoo from the comfort of your own classrooms.  Through Video Conferencing you can meet the animals, talk with experts and explore Conservation on a whole new level.
