Program Description

In tandem with the PBS miniseries, The New Americans, KCPT is producing "The New Americans in Kansas City," a program about immigrants from around the globe seeking refuge from persecution or opportunity for themselves and their children. The 30-minute program will highlight five families: a Bantu-Somali family who have been granted refugee status; an African girl who came on a medical visa and was legally adopted by a Leawood family; a Ukrainian who came seeking opportunity, but has been denied jobs for which he's qualified; a Vietnamese family of 10 who came for religious freedoms and for the education of their children; and a Bosnian Croat family who embody the idea of the American Family, yet are threated with deportation due to a technicality in their passports. This program hopes to bring to light the fact that regardless of their status, these New Americans are not merely numbers, but faces with stories.
