Nick Haines

Nick Haines, Executive Producer, Public Affairs

Nick Haines leads KCPT’s news and public affairs division. Haines is host of KCPT’s primetime public affairs program Kansas City Week in Review and Executive Producer of KCPT’s weekly food-for-thought-fight Ruckus, as well as numerous community-interest documentaries and specials.

Nick is a former BBC radio news reporter and holds a degree in Government from the University of Essex, UK.

Nick joined KCPT in 1999 after a ten-year career in public radio news. He is the former news director of KANU in Lawrence, KS and for three years covered the Kansas legislature as a statehouse correspondent for Kansas Public Radio. His reports have been featured on National Public Radio and the Voice of America.

Randy Mason

Randy Mason, Executive Producer, Cultural Affairs

Since arriving at KCPT in 1984, Randy has worked as a reporter, producer, writer and host of such series as Kansas City Illustrated and KCPT Marquee. He’s been involved in numerous documentaries with writer C.W. Gusewelle, including This Place Called Home, Water & Fire: A Story of the Ozarks, and Stories Under the Stone. In 2000, he produced the area’s first long-form HD series–a five-part history of the arts called Uniquely Kansas City. In 2002, he received a regional Emmy for his role as executive producer and host of Tapping Kansas City, a history of beer making in the region.

As co-producer with Michael Murphy of the offbeat art and travel series Rare Visions & Roadside Revelations, he’s been recognized with ten regional Emmy Awards. The show is syndicated to PBS stations around the country and distributed for broadcast on Indonesian television.

In 2004, he and Murphy received a National Emmy for their work on the documentary Be Good, Smile Pretty, a co-production of KCPT and the Orphans of War Foundation. Mason, a native of Iola, Kansas, is a 1977 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas.

Anne Peterson

Anne Peterson is an experienced writer, producer, on-air personality and media professional.  As a 25-year veteran of broadcast news, she has been honored with several industry awards including three Emmy nominations.  She and her long time co-anchor (Wendall Anschutz) also held the honor of being the longest running anchor team in the country.

Fred Logan

Fred Logan is a frequent guest on KCPT’s public affairs program, Kansas City Week in Review.

He writes “Public Affairs Journal,” a column in the Kansas City Business Journal.  The Kansas Press Association awarded him first place Awards of Excellence for column writing in 2008 and 2010.

Fred also has served as the Political Analyst for KCTV5, the CBS affiliate in Kansas City, since 2002.  He covered the 2008 Democratic National Convention from Denver and the 2008 Republican National Convention from St. Paul and was featured in live news shots from both sites.

In December, 2006, Fred was invited by the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas to serve on a regional panel of commentators who analyzed the November election results.  In October, 2009, Fred presented a political analysis program in the Polsky Practical Enrichment series at the Johnson County College. He has also appeared frequently on 980 KMBZ’s Shanin and Parks radio program.

Fred is an attorney and partner with Logan Logan & Watson, L.C., a Prairie Village law firm.

Kathleen Leighton

Kathleen Leighton

Kathleen Leighton has been a television news anchor for more than 25 years and is also an accomplished writer, producer and corporate media trainer. After leaving the anchor desk in Buffalo, New York, Kathleen began her own company, Leighton Communications, Inc., in Kansas City. She does voice and on-camera work for local and national clients, her writing has appeared in The New York Times and many other publications, and she also counsels corporations on the importance of implementing a social media policy.
